POST RADIATION ALOPECIA<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Unlike chemotherapy, which usually causes a reversible hair loss called (effluvium anagen), radiation therapy could cause both reversible fall as well as permanent loss of hair follicles (cicatricial alopecia) in some cases.<\/p>\n

Radiation therapy (RT) in high doses and applied directly to the scalp, which is used for the treatment of intracranial malignant tumors, can completely destroy the hair follicles, resulting in permanent alopecia. Usually, it also causes clinical scarring of the skin with varying degrees of dermal fibrosis, disorders in the microcirculation of the scalp with consequent compromise of the blood supply.<\/p>\n

There are different methods of (RT) and the doses may vary depending on the characteristics of the tumor, but it seems that the radioactive lethal load for the hair follicles is any that exceeds 16 Gy. Undoubtedly, the capillary damage is also proportional to the repetition, that is to say, the number of treatment sessions.<\/p>\n

In areas where hair looks thinner, such as the vertex-crown area, there is no AGA, but it is miniaturization produced by radiation leakage. At these vanishing points where the energy of the radiation is lower, the germinative elements of the follicular unit are partially destroyed, allowing the growth of a weak hair that is to be permanently maintained with these characteristics.<\/p>\n

Due to the lack of naturalness that this alopecia produces, generally due to its asymmetry, these patients are left with important psychological sequelae once the underlying disease is resolved.<\/p>\n

Hair transplant may be the solution to permanent hair loss by radiation, but achieving the growth of transplanted hair to be successful in a directly radiated area can be very difficult.<\/p>\n
